Take a step back
in time and enjoy the country just as the early settlers did.
Although this is a total wilderness experience our backcountry
camps have many of the comforts of home. You will reside in canvas
cabins with a vinyl floor, you sleep on comfortable foam padded
cots, and there are wood burning stoves for those chillier nights
that you may need a little extra warmth. To remove the trail
dust after a hard day of horseback riding and/or hiking there
is a hot shower available for you to enjoy before settling back
in front of the fire to watch the night fall over the peaceful
serenity of the forest. Our goal is to provide maximum comfort
without spoiling the tranquility of the wilderness setting.
Our Hagan Ridge camp is nestled in the pines along side a grassy
meadow with a lazy stream meandering through the flowing grass
and wildflowers. You start your adventure by arriving at camp
from mid to late afternoon. This gives you time to settle in
and explore the blissful surroundings, meet your hosts and guides,
and most important to become acquainted with the mount that will
be your trail companion for your getaway. In the evenings, everyone
gravitates towards the Gospel Dome cook tent, the heart and soul
of the camp, to sit down for a nice hot country style dinner
topped off with a home made dessert. Afterwards, you can sit
by the fire and listen to the nightlife of the forest or retire
early to get a good nights rest before starting the next day's
adventure.
The next day you will wake up to the smell of fresh brewed coffee
and a piping hot breakfast. As you venture from your canvas cabin
you might surprise an elk, deer or even a moose that was moseying
through camp or the meadow. Now you can sit back and take if
easy and have another cup of coffee while the guide saddles your
horse or for those who like to be more involved you are more
than welcome to help groom and saddle your own. Then we're off
down the trail for the day's adventure. We have several activities
that we offer and since this is your vacation please let us know
what you desire during your getaway.
If fishing is your pleasure, we can ride to several different
crystal clear lakes full of scrappy cutthroat trout. There are
even a few lakes that are accessible by foot only. These lakes
typically have bigger fish in them as they see very little human
traffic and a lot of the time you can fish the day away and never
be disturbed by another person (a little piece of paradise for
any fisherman). Although, you may have to share the lake with
a moose that is stirring up the water for a little lunch of his
own.
- Take a day to explore
the old Ghost town of Florence. In your mind, you can drift back
in time and imagine what life must have been like for those hard
working gold prospectors of a 100 years ago or more. Walk through
some of the ruins of the miners' cabins that are still standing.
See the dredge pond and hydraulic mining ditches that the miners
used to try and strike it rich mining for gold. Inspect the jail
that they used to confine any outlaws that plagued the town.
Like that wily scoundrel "Cherokee" Bob Talbot, who
ran wild through out the town and was eventually bushwhacked
by two local citizens. You can also visit boot hill, the old
time cemetery, that is just outside of the town site. Where it
is said that only one of the residents was buried without his
boots on and that was a baby.
If you just like to explore there are miles of mountain forest
to experience. Bring a camera and see all the plant and wildlife
the wilderness has to offer and shoot to your heart's content.
This is a true wilderness and is teaming with all the wildlife
you can imagine. You may see deer, elk, moose, mountain goats,
big horn sheep, a variety of birds and other small critters that
will bring out the photographer in you.

- For the more ambitious
and athletic souls we can take off hiking for the day. Take a
backpack and head out cross-country and imagine what the pioneers
in this country saw as they crossed the Great Rocky Mountains.
Stalk some of the more elusive animals to see if you can get
that up close and personal picture that most have never seen.
You may even come across a wolf or two doing a little stalking
of their own.
For those of you that are just looking for an escape away from
the fast pace of technological life there are still activities
for you to enjoy. Such as sitting around the campfire for the
day taking in the local scenery while enjoying a good book or
take a stroll around camp to see what is hidden right under ones
nose. With no interruptions from cell phones, computers, TVs
and the general hustle and bustle of every day city life. Maybe
you want to just sit back and take a deep breath of clean mountain
air.
After the days adventure, we return to camp for a hearty down
home country dinner. After the wonderful dutch oven dinner, kick
back in our comfortable chairs and observe the Blue Jays and
Camp Robbers stopping by for an evening snack. It is hard to
resist the pull of the warm glow and radiant heat of the open
campfire. As the day fades into a spectacular night with a sky
so full of glittering stars they seem close enough to reach out
and touch you might even hear a distant howl of a coyote or wolf
as nightfall brings the end to another peaceful day in Idaho's
magnificent back country.
